About 40 family and friends of Megan and Justin Saffell and Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity board members and volunteers gathered Sunday to dedicate and bless the Saffells’ home.
The home, located at 901 W. Washington St in Jefferson, has undergone extensive repair and renovation as a Habitat project, with the Saffells working alongside volunteers, and materials paid for by the Saffells through a zero interest loan from Habitat funds.
Habitat board members Adam Pedersen and Angie Jewett spoke, and Habitat affiliate board president Harry Ahrenholt did the ceremonial presentation of the keys to the Saffells.
Habitat associate director Jeff Lamoureux presented the Saffells with some special gifts – a gift basket provided by Proctor & Gamble, a custom plaque created by Roger Aegerter of scrap wood from the house, a rocking chair made by Iowa Prison Industries, and a Bible.
Lamoureux explained that Iowa Prison Industries made the kitchen and bathroom cabinets for the home, and it is their tradition to also donate a chair for every Habitat home they are part of.
Pastor Tom Hinote of The Sanctuary read scripture and offered the opening and closing prayer. Members of The Sanctuary provided refreshments and hosted an open house following the dedication.
Donors of in-kind gifts to the project were thanked, including local donors Joel Williams, Tri-County Lumber, Durlam Electric and Lance Swain; and national donors Dow Chemical Corporation, Hunter-Douglas Corporation, Valspar Paints, Whirlpool Corporation and Yale Locks.
